Kyriacos Kousoulides engages in a raw, almost primal form of painting. The dominant element in his work is writing. A writing filled with references, ranging from Anglo-Saxon pop culture to the trauma of the invasion of his homeland. His work is intensely political, possessing the character of a complete, self-contained, autonomous world, somewhat like the Temporary Autonomous Zones (T.A.Z.) that activist writer Hakim Bey wrote about—zones where an individual can establish their own governance, detached from state influences, and thus from compromises and disappointments. Kousoulidis's visual language is based on the use of highly diluted watercolors applied on what seems like raw canvas, where complex and cryptic references to expressionism, comic and caricature culture, the art of the mentally ill, and who knows what else, intertwine...
